The death or other replacement of an old computer will often require that data files be transitioned to the new computer. Typically this is a rather straightforward, though time consuming, process. The death of an old laptop often means that the user no longer has any means of accessing the data on the laptop, particularly if the laptop is replaced by a new desktop. A similar situation will arise if a new desktop supporting only a SATA hard drive interface replaces one that supported only ATA.
